Angry Birds Rio for Symbian lands in Nokia's Ovi Store. Angry Birds is one franchise that sure gives new meaning to the word cross-platform. Angry Birds Rio, the latest installment in the bird-slinging series from Rovio Mobile, is now available in Nokia's Ovi Store, ready to fly to your Symbian device. Angry Birds Rio has so far been spotted on iOS, Android, and webOS.
As with the versions for all the other platforms, Angry Birds Rio for Symbian has a story that's a bit different to what fans of the franchise have seen so far. The original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to Rio de Janeiro, where they manage to escape their captors and subsequently set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel -- two macaws that incidentally are also the stars of the movie Rio. The gameplay is mostly unchanged though, and you get two episodes right now, with more episodic updates promised, for free, in May, July, October, and November.

Angry Birds Rio for Symbian is only available for devices running the 'new Symbian', also known as Symbian^3. At the moment, these are the Nokia N8, E7, C7, and C6-01.

Skype 5.3 for Windows Download. Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.
The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app. When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.
It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.
Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

Adobe's just let fly its latest beta of Flash Player bringing it to 10.3 beta 2. The update brings stability increases and bug fixes, as well as all the new features from the beta 1 release earlier this month. Adobe has also brought its AIR runtime up to speed with the latest developments in Flash, releasing Adobe AIR 2.7 beta for your downloading pleasure.

AIR 2.7 adds support for Adobe SiteCatalyst's Media Measurement tools that allow media analytics with just a few lines of code. Adobe's Acoustic Echo Cancellation, which it introduced with Flash 10.3 beta, has also made it across into its AIR brother, allowing developers of AIR-based VoIP systems to take advantage of Adobe's new audio enhancement tools. Finally, an enhanced HTMLLoader API has made the cut, giving standalone AIR apps more control over clickable HTML links.

Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.
Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.
That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. Few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 on HTC HD7 user.

Facebook launches Two Mobile Site

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com, have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. Quickoffice has launched a version of its mobile office suite that's custom specifically for Android Honeycomb tablets. Quickoffice Pro HD was designed from the ground up for tablet apply, and as such features a user interface that's meant to take advantage of the extra screen real estate tablets have equated to smartphones.

Quickoffice Pro HD for Android Tablets provides you to create, view and edit Microsoft Office files, accepting Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. The cloud storage supporting that's baked into Quickoffice for Android smartphones has also made it into Quickoffice Pro HD, allowing you to remotely access files from your Dropbox, Google Docs, Box.net, Huddle, SugarSync, and MobileMe accounts. Quickoffice Pro HD also comes with a built-in file manager that lets you easily access files stored on your SD card, as well as an integrated PDF viewer.

Text can be copied and pasted within the same Quickoffice app, or between different apps (from the word processor to the spreadsheet, for example). Most user actions can be undone or redone. You can insert images into documents and presentations, either directly from the camera, or from the Gallery. The app also has text-to-speech support alongside voice input dictation. Files can be shared via email, Bluetooth, SMS, and cloud services, and you can move and resize text boxes, images and shapes.

Canon Rebel T3 DSLR. Are you a true contrarian looking for a camera that befits your nonconformist lifestyle? Well, Canon's latest entry-level DSLR may not be the most unruly camera out, but at least it sports a moniker that fits the bill. The Canon T3 Rebel, also known as the EOS 1100D, is a 12.2-megapixel affair designed with the DSLR newbie in mind, and according to a review over at PhotographyBlog, it doesn't sacrifice image quality for ease of use. Touted as a successor to the Rebel XS, the T3 actually carries over some useful features from its more sophisticated sibling, the T3i, including a user-friendly control layout, but lacks the camera's Scene Intelligent auto mode and extensive list of creative filters. Aside from that, the reviewer found T3's grips too slick and its diminutive LCD screen a minor setback, but was quick to point out that none of these is a deal-breaker. In fact, aside from a bit of noise encountered at the highest ISO setting, the camera delivers high quality photographs even in low light. All things considered, it looks like the Rebel T3 is a "responsive and intuitive DSLR" for the novice photog, and at $600, it's got at least some of the competition beat. Ainol Honeycomb tablet surfaces with Cortex A9 processor. It's been quite a while since Ainol last popped up on our radar, but it looks like the company is now busy preparing a Honeycomb tablet that might actually stand out from the pack for better or worse.
According to a couple of teasers that have cropped up in recent days, the tablet will apparently pack an ARM Cortex A9 processor, a 1,280 x 800 IPS display of unspecified size, WiFi and 3G connectivity, a microSD card slot, HDMI out and, most noticeably, a full suite of buttons that adorn what appears to be a somewhat chunky design. Still no indication of a price, but the tablet is apparently due out sometime next month.

Dell freshens up Inspiron M5030. The Athlon-powered M5030 from Dell hardly looked like a machine that would be bearing an "industry first" label when it launched in September of last year, but now it's doing exactly that thanks to an intriguing new mod from its maker. The 15.6-incher is being released with its keyboard and Windows 7 installation customized in Spanish, neither of which would be unusual were it not for the fact that it's going to be on sale in the US. It's not exactly a vast overhaul, as only a couple of physical keys are swapped out and switching Win 7 into and out of Spanish mode can be done in the time it takes to click a mouse, but still, it's significant in that it services the speakers of the States' second most commonly used language. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play review. The PlayStation Phone. We've had quite the intimate history with this gamepad-equipped slider, learning of its secretive existence way back in August and then handling a prototype unit in January, so you'll forgive us for feeling sentimental and still entertaining our pet name for it. The Sony Ericsson marketing gurus renamed it the Xperia Play when it finally went official at MWC this year, but the PlayStation connection remains as strong as ever. Aside from the D-pad, iconic game keys, and two touchpads, this device comes with a little app named PlayStation Pocket, which will be serving up dollops of classic PlayStation One gaming to all those with a taste for it. Yes, the Sony influence is strong with this one, and the Android Market will be joining the fun with Xperia Play-optimized titles from third-party developers. So all we really need to know now is whether the Android smartphone underpinning this smash-bang fusion of old and new school entertainment happens to be any good. Shall we get Started?

There's likely little point in us trying to discuss any of the Xperia Play's The PlayStation Phone external hardware before addressing its literal and figurative centerpiece, the slide-out gamepad. A DualShock attached to your smartphone it is not, but you already knew that. The real question is how close it comes to replicating the console experience rather than how well it competes with it. Judged on such terms, the Play acquits itself very well. The digital directional keys are firm with a satisfying amount of travel and the same goes for the face buttons. Squeezed in between them, Sony Ericsson also throws in a pair of analog pads, which react to your input in much the same fashion as the capacitive touchscreen does -- with the big difference being that while you use the pads you're not obscuring any of the action on screen. Each pad has a handy indented dot at its center, helping to orient your thumb without the need to look down.

Nokia continues reinvention, details new fonts and branding. Nokia's current typeface -- Nokia Sans -- feels like one of the great constants in the consumer electronics industry, a design that instantly screams "Nokia" the moment you see it (for better or worse). That kind of strong, tight brand recognition from something as basic and simple as a character on a screen really isn't something that you can buy -- it needs to be built and cultivated over many, many years -- so we're sure that Espoo's decision to chuck it and start fresh wasn't taken lightly. In fact, we're sure it wasn't taken lightly because the company has published an 800-plus word explanation and defense of its decision to kill off Nokia Sans and replace it with Nokia Pure, a font it describes as the embodiment of "beauty in supreme usability."
Of course, it's no coincidence that the font change comes just as Nokia's trying to go back to the drawing board, both with its hiring of outsider Stephen Elop and its decision to phase out Symbian and add Windows Phone into the mix; sure enough, the company says that it plans to use Pure on its devices and that "it has been designed specially for mobile and digital environments." ThinkPad Edge E420s now shipping for $699, E220s coming in April

ThinkPad Edge E420s. Don't tell us you've forgotten about Lenovo's pair of new Edge machines! Sure, they've taken a while to get to market, perhaps having been inconvenienced by a little hiccup with Intel's Core 2011 chipsets, but the first of them is now well and truly on sale and the other is looking eager and ready to go too. The 14-inch E420s is up on Lenovo's web store, starting at $699 with a 2.1GHz Core i3-2310M CPU, while its 12.5-inch sibling, the E220s, is expected on the 8th of April, judging by the roadmap doc we've uncovered below. The E420s touts what Lenovo calls an Infinity Glass display, meaning simply edge-to-edge glass, alongside a fingerprint reader, a fetching new matte black lid, a HD webcam, 4GB of RAM and 250GB of HDD storage at a minimum, and a 48.8Wh battery. A 1366 x 768 resolution is your only option, unfortunately, though you can spruce up performance by quite a bit if you opt for the i5-2410M, which does 2.3GHz at default speeds or 2.9GHz when only one of its two cores is pushed to the limit ... or should that be to the Edge?

Panasonic Lumix GH2 review. In case you're still wondering if Panasonic's mirrorless Lumix GH2 is worth your $900, we've rounded up a handful of reviews to provide a pointer for your next big purchase. While most reviewers agree that this Micro Four Thirds camera appears to be very similar to its predecessor, they universally praise the subtly improved ergonomics, speedy liveview autofocusing, and refined image quality, especially with its 1080p AVCHD video recording (although Digital Camera Resource Page did notice some artifacting in its clips). Noise is also a non-issue up to about ISO 800 or 1600, though it's apparent that the 16 megapixel stills are comparatively dull and, like those from many other MFTs, aren't quite on par with DSLRs -- expect plenty of manual processing work here, as demoed by the good folks over at Digital Photography Review. All in all, the GH2 is a great kit for high quality video capturing, bundled with a pretty good still performance that requires some extra TLC afterwards -- kinda ironic in a way, but hey, this isn't a problem for lovers of video bokeh. LGs 3D-shooting Optimus Pad nabs March 31st retail date in Japan as T-Mobile fiddles. Japan's NTT DOCOMO just announced a March 31st retail offering of LG's Optimus Pad. The Honeycomb tablet listed as model L-06C is the same 8.9-inch 1280 x 768 pixel slab known as the G-Slate 'round T-Mobile subscribers. Besides its 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor and internationally compatible 3G data and GPS, the Optimus Pad's most noteworthy features are the stereoscopic rear-facing video cameras capable of 1080p 3D capture which you can viewed directly on the L-06C with a pair of passive glasses. Unfortunately, NTT DOCOMO is mum on pricing. Remember, although T-Mobile originally hedged with a spring launch (recently rumored for April 20th), LG told us that it'd be arriving on US soil in March. So... T-Mobile, anything you'd like to add before Thursday?

Switched On: The PlayBook polyglot

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology. When Apple introduced the iPad, it had but a smattering of third-party applications, but the company stressed its own. As Apple iPhone software SVP Scott Forstall stated in the iPad introduction video, "We looked at the device and we decided: let's redesign it all. Let's redesign, reimagine and rebuild every single app from the ground up specifically for the iPad."
Compare this to the strategy employed by RIM, makers of the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. One year after the iPad's debut, Apple's head start in apps has proven a formidable advantage against the onslaught of slates announced by its competitors in the smartphone world. Some have chosen to latch onto Android and attain backwards compatibility with over 200,000 existing smartphone apps. HP, with its TouchPad as flagship, will circle its wagons of PCs, printers and phones around the webOS platform. However, the announcement this week that RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook will support Android apps says much about how the company sees its position in the tablet wars.
C and C++ are the native routes to app development on RIM's long-gestated tablet, but they certainly not the only ways. Flash / Adobe AIR and HTML5 will also be supported as will several popular game engines. Android and Java apps will be accommodated with add-on players and distributed via RIM's App World, RIM's app marketplace. The ability to run Android apps without the underlying Android operating system certainly helps bring a degree of cachet as well as functionality. At a discussion with an executive from a downmarket carrier at the CTIA Wireless show in Orlando last week, I asked what customers are asking for as they adopt smartphones. His response: "Android. Android is the brand. They want the apps."
But support for Android could also have some potential downsides. With the BlackBerry OS platform generally taking a backseat to other smartphone platforms and a major platform shift to QNX in the works, Android support could serve as a sideshow that gives Android developers even less reason to natively support the platform. Android apps are also unlikely to exploit the PlayBook hardware and user interface, both of which have generated consumer excitement on their own merits. Contrast this with Apple's attempt to optimize the iOS app experience to the point where it sought to block third-party development tools because of concern about cross-platform apps that might pander to the lowest common denominator.
Controlling the software platform may not be as vital to RIM as it is to Apple or others, but it's still an important priority in which RIM is heavily investing. RIM's challenge will be weaving the PlayBook's hodgepodge of sources into a tapestry of engaging functionality. Apple may prioritize a consistently crafted experience but RIM is about delivering what works to encourage adoption and development. The key is ensuring that Android apps remain more or less an option of last resort, while the company can build the case for QNX apps that showcase and differentiate the PlayBook from competitors in the tablet space, and to help the company make a case for the same operating system to power future smartphones.

We're still waiting on LG's ginormous 72-inch LZ7900 to make its debut on store shelves, but the rest of CES's primo 3DTV crop is rearing to ride out, with Sony's HX929, HX820 and HX720 series of LED-backlit LCD screens and LG's Infinia PZ750 plasmas now priced at Amazon. 3D-Display-info.com found Sony's locally-dimmed Bravia sets starting at $2,099 for a 46-inch HX720 with Gorilla Glass protection, all the way up to $3,799 for the premium 55-inch XBR-55HX929 with a full-array LED backlight. Meanwhile, the 50-inch LG PZ750 (with Smart TV, naturally) starts out at $1,599, while a 60-inch version of the same thing will run $2,199. Which one fits best in your den? That depends on a number of things, but we will add that the Sony sets are merely up for pre-order, while the LG units are listed as shipping within a matter of weeks.

An Italian demonstrator gave us hope, but now we're empty inside -- the exceptionally thin 11.6-inch version of Samsung's 9 Series laptop will indeed come with a puny 64GB solid state drive. Well, perhaps empty is a bit of an exaggeration, as the machine's gorgeous duralumin curves fill our hearts with joy, as does the comparatively inexpensive $1,199 price tag that Sammy just confirmed on its website. And hey, we know of an Engadget editor making do with just 60GB of storage in his notebook, so it's not an untenable thing -- but when Samsung's marketing materials proudly boast that "You'll have room to bring it all with you with the 64GB drive," it's hard to repress the tears. We reviewed the 3DS and found it a solid system that's only going to get better. We reviewed Crysis 2 and found it an engaging shooter with a nice amount of depth. Samsung Mobile Phones I8700 Omnia 7 have Build quality solid and smooth. The backing has a matte finish, so your hands won't slip when holding the device (unlike the iPhone 3G/3GS). The weight is just right - not too heavy and not light/cheap feeling. The battery/SIM card compartment door on the back is metal yet thin. It's probably not the thinnest device in the world, but if you want something thinner you're better off with a plastic device. All buttons (including the awesome "real" push Windows home button) click confidently.

Software/OS: First of all, keep in mind that this device (as of 1/24/11) does not have multitasking built in. I'm assuming this will be a software update later on. All finger-swipe actions so far are VERY smooth - no stuttering as found in my previous Android device. The tiles respond extremely quickly and, with the Super AMOLED screen, look like water when they do move. The only issue I have found so far is that if you follow a link to the Windows Marketplace from anywhere except through the "official" app, the app freezes and you have to restart the phone. This issue has been documented and will hopefully be fixed during the next update. Wireless connectivity was so easy I almost didn't realize that it had connected - it was automatic to my home network after asking for the password. Overall, Windows Phone software/OS is a DREAM compared to Android/iOS.

Battery life: Compared to almost every phone I've ever owned and considering the awesome amount of work I put this phone through, the battery life is amazing. Again, it doesn't multitask so I'm sure batter life will suffer when that updates comes through. I was able to make it through 1 1/2 days of occasional use before it even complained of a low battery life (even with wifi on the entire time). I would give it at least 10 hours on occasional use - 24 hours on standby.

A lot of people are asking me for a rundown of the differences between the original iPad and the new iPad 2 unveiled yesterday. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s changed, and what hasn’t changed.

Dimensions - CHANGED (slightly)
While the overall footprint of the iPad 2 is the same as that of the iPad, the thickness has gone down from 13.4mm to 8.8mm. The weight is also down for all models (WiFi model down from 680g to 601g while the WiFi + 3G is down from 730g to 613g for the AT&T model and 607g for the Verizon model.

Screen - UNCHANGED
No change here - The iPad 2 makes use of the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS 1024 x 768 screen as the original iPad. At this point one unknown relating to the screen is what graphics processor Apple has used. The original iPad used a PowerVR SGX 535 chip. We’ll have to wait for the teardowns to find this out.

Processor - UPDATED
Out with the old 1GHz single-core A4 chip, and in with a dual-core 1GHz A5 chip. The original A4 featured 256MB of RAM while the iPhone 4 has 512MB. Again, we’re going to have to wait for the teardowns to appear to know if this has changed.

Storage - UNCHNAGED
The options for storage remain the same - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.

Radios - UPDATED
While WiFi and Bluetooth ramain the same (802.11 a/b/g/n and 2.1 + EDR respectively) the cell radio in the updated ipad has been updated. The original iPad featured EDGE plus triband HSPA while the iPad 2 features EDGE plus quadband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz) and GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) for the AT&T versions and CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz) for the Verizon model.

Price - UNCHANGED
The price remains unchanged for all models - iPad 2 starts at $499 for the 16GB WiFi-only model.

There are a few features completely new to the iPad 2. Here’s a rundown:
Front-facing VGA camera
Rear-facing 720p camera
Gyroscope
New case (optional) that is attached by magnets (how DO they work? ;) and features a microfibre surface.

It's a big week for PlayStation Portable rumors. On Monday, we caught wind of the PSP2, which had reportedly been shown off to developers, backstage at the Tokyo Game Show, back in September. The rumor hit the wire the same day that Sony made a big price to the PSP Go--which has proven to be something of a disappointment since launch.

Last night, rumors about a PlayStation Phone resurfaced, thanks to an Engadget post, which featured several images of the mythical device. "It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real," Engadget wrote, "but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for."

The handset looks to be running some version of Google's Android OS--the site seems pretty certain that it will be running Gingerbread, the next major version of Android. The phone also reportedly comes stocked with Sony Marketplace, so users can buy and download games (which, I suppose, is sort of the whole point of having a PlayStation Phone).

Inside, the phone has a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 chip, 512MB of RAM, and 1GB of storage. The screen is around four inches or so.

The unit itself is still apparently pretty buggy, though Engadget seems to believe that it could hit stores as early as end of year.

The only question is, how do you get all that audio goodness onto your device? We’ll take a quick look at how to do that here.

The process is relatively simple. The first step is to get your phone hooked up to your computer, and to mount the SD card. When you plug in your phone via USB, pull down the top notification menu, and choose the option to mount the SD card. After a few seconds, you should get a message that your SD card is mounted and ready for file transfers.

At this point, open up “My Computer” on your PC, and choose the last removable disk. This should be your SD card in your phone. If you can’t figure out which device is your phone, unmount your SD card via the pull down menu on your phone, unplug your device, and see which removable device disappears inside your “My Computer” folder. When you plug the phone in again, the one that then appears is the phone.

Once you get inside your SD card, you’ll need to create some folders. Simply go into the removable device, and create these files:

1. On the root of the card, create a folder called “media” (no quotes)
2. Inside media, create a folder called “audio” (no quotes)

After that, you’ll need to create folders depending on how you want to use your sounds:

* To use any of these sounds as alarms, inside audio, create a folder called “alarms” (no quotes)
* To use any of these sounds as notifications, inside audio, create a folder called “notifications” (no quotes)
* To use any of these sounds as ringtones, inside audio, create a folder called “ringtones” (no quotes)

That’s it! Simply unmount your SD card and reboot the phone. Once it starts back up, just go to Settings - Sounds and Notifications, and your files should show up, depending on where you put them.
